How to use link cancellation in SMS

Use unsubscribe links in your SMS messages. It's user-friendly and free for you and your recipients.

When you send a text message, you can give your recipient the option to unsubscribe from your SMS list again - that is, the recipient can ask you to stop sending text messages to them.

If you send messages for marketing purposes, the Marketing Act requires that the recipient must be given the opportunity to unsubscribe.

An SMS unsubscribe can be done using a keyword or using an unsubscribe link in your SMS message. It can be a good idea to use a link rather than a keyword, as there is a cost to having access to a keyword, and a link is often easier for the recipient and therefore more user-friendly.

If you want to create an unsubscribe link in SMS, you can follow our guide below.

How to set up the unsubscribe link in SMS:

Before you get started: In order to use links in SMS, you need to create a subdomain. We show you how to do this in our guide: "Setting up a subdomain for link tracking".

Once you've created a subdomain, you can start by making your unsubscribe page more unique by adding your company logo and choosing a language for the page. Here's how you do it:

  1. Go to "Domains" in the menu to the left.
  2. Select the domain you want to use for link cancellation.
  3. Click "Link unsubscription" in the menu under the domain name.
  4. Here you can create languages and insert your logo for a more unique unsubscribe experience.

Now you're all set to use your unsubscribe link in your SMS messages. Here's how you do it:

  1. Go to the "Campaigns" menu item.
  2. Click on "New campaign".
  3. Select the list you want to send the message to and whether to use Mobile number cooldown and segmentation. Click on "Next".
  4. Enter your sender name and the SMS message.
  5. Tick "Add unsubscribe to SMS message" (note that this is required in marketing messages).
  6. Select "Unsubscribe link" and find the correct domain (if you have several). In the mobile example to the right, you can see how the SMS message will look to the recipient.
  7. Go ahead and complete your campaign, which now ends with a link to unsubscribe.
