Guide to setting up a subdomain

Learn how to create a subdomain for link tracking and unsubscribe links in SMS - it's your shortcut to high usability and valuable data!

Do you want to work with link tracking - or give your SMS recipients the option to unsubscribe via a link? Then the first step is to create a subdomain.

Once you have created a subdomain, you can make use of the many benefits of using link tracking and link cancellation in inMobile.

How to create a subdomain in inMobile

  1. Select "Domains" from the menu.
  2. Click here on the "New domain" button.
  3. Enter your desired subdomain here (if you are unsure what to enter here, you can find an explanation of subdomains in this guide).
  4. Click on "Create domain".

Now the part that needs to be done in inMobile is done.

In order for the domain to be used, you must go to your DNS provider and create a DNS record of type CNAME.

How this process works varies from provider to provider, but you can usually find a good guide to this on the individual DNS provider's website.

As a starting point, you should always do the following:

  1. Choose your type of DNS record: Here you select CNAME.
  2. Choose which value your DNS record should point to: You can find this in inMobile under "Enter this value".
  3. Choose hostname: Here you insert the subdomain you just created in inMobile.

Once you have created your DNS record with your DNS provider, you are effectively done.

Then simply wait for the subdomain to be verified. This can take up to 24 hours. Once the subdomain is verified, it is listed as "Active" under the "Domains" menu item in inMobile.

Advantages of a subdomain

There are several advantages to creating a subdomain:

  • You can use link tracking in your SMS messages. It's likely to increase your average CTR and provide access to valuable data at the same time.
  • Your recipients can unsubscribe from your SMS list via a link. This means you save the cost of having a keyword to unsubscribe.
  • A link - whether it's to unsubscribe or your website - increases the usability of your SMS messages.

What is a subdomain?

A subdomain is an independent subdomain that is connected to your main domain. The subdomain will be listed before your main domain, the two are separated by a dot: subdomain.domain.dk

If your domain is inmobile.com, your subdomain could be, for example, s.inmobile.com - but of course you choose that yourself. If you use your subdomain in an SMS, however, we recommend that you keep it short due to the limit on the number of characters per SMS.
