Klaviyo has entered the SMS market in the Nordics - a market that inMobile has been part of since 2008 when we started developing the inMobile SMS gateway. With this article, we want to clarify the differences and similarities between our solutions, as a number of questions have arisen from customers, agencies and industry professionals after the launch.

First of all, it's important to emphasise that we welcome the increased focus on SMS marketing, as it's a hugely effective channel that is still relatively untapped - especially compared to email marketing. Many companies will therefore benefit greatly from using SMS in their daily sales, communication and marketing processes.

A more expensive solution

The overriding issue for marketing departments when choosing systems for their activities is price. This is where there is a clear difference between Klaviyo and inMobile.

InMobile offers great transparency and flexibility; you pay for the number of SMSes you send - whether it's during big campaign months or periods when there are hardly any SMSes being sent. Prices per SMS range between 0.259 - 0.279 DKK/SMS in Denmark.

Klaviyo's pricing structure is somewhat more complex. Here you choose your package on a monthly basis, which includes XX number of credits. These credits are converted to SMS, corresponding to a price of 0.40 DKK to 0.57 DKK in Denmark.

For example, if you send 10,000 SMS per month, you'll save DKK 1,495 every month if you choose inMobile. The more you ship per month, the greater the monthly savings. This is evident when we calculate the total price at 60,000 monthly SMSes. Here you save 8,136 DKK per month if you choose inMobile. The price difference is about the same in the rest of the Nordics.

Resource-intensive subscription structure

Black Week, public holidays and various other major campaigns cause more fluctuations throughout the year on the webshop's SMS usage, which can be expensive when using Klaviyo. Each month, you choose the number of credits you want for the coming month. And predicting your spend for the next four weeks can be very difficult.

If you use all the credits in your subscription, you can either have your subscription set to auto-upgrade to buy X number of additional credits - if not, all broadcasting stops and your potentially promising and important campaign comes to a standstill. This also applies to messages in your flows.

The upgrade continues into the next month unless you actively go in and downgrade again, so it requires some attention to your subscription to make sure you're not paying for a lot of credits you never use. And that's a point in itself; if you don't use all your credits, they are lost. They are non-refundable and do not carry over to the following month.

All in all, the subscription structure is somewhat more resource-intensive compared to just paying for the SMSes you actually send, as every month you have to manually check what marketing activities you have coming up and how much usage you expect to have in the coming period.

You also lose the ability to create impulsive campaigns based on factors such as the weather; a wine retailer will often get a lot out of a rosé campaign on a sunny day. You may also need a revenue boost or a sale on items that are nearing their expiry date. The flexibility to act on these situations is absent with Klaviyo.

The big challenge with Klaviyo's billing method is that you can't possibly hit the number of credits/SMSs exactly, so even if the above example is upgraded and downgraded every month as needed, there will be a waste. In the example above, you end up paying DKK 5245 for SMSes that have not been used.

Another important point is that an SMS consists of 160 characters. Therefore, you need to know the specific message texts for the following month, or at least know how many composite SMSes the promotional messages consist of to predict your usage when upgrading or downgrading your Klaviyo package at the beginning of the month.

Good functionality

When a large international player like Klaviyo enters new territory, it's natural that it creates a stir in the industry, and it must be said that it is easy to create a combination solution between inMobile and Klaviyo, so you can use Klaviyo for automated flows and inMobile for your campaigns.
