Did you know that few companies use text messaging to reach the recipient? The number is growing, yet few people realise the effectiveness of text messaging when it comes to communicating. This is despite the fact that texting has been around for more than 20 years and is one of the most used communication channels in everyday life. So there is huge potential in using text messaging, but how exactly should you go about it?

Here are five tips to get started using text messaging in your communication:

#1 How do you get your audience's attention?

98% of Danes read a text message within a short time. However, that doesn't necessarily mean you can get your message across easily. Think carefully about what is important to say and relate it to your audience. What do you think will catch the attention of your target audience? Create a strategy and act on it.

#2 Have you thought about the message?

The more precise and clear your message is, the better. Danes are busy and don't have time to read long text messages, which, in the worst case scenario, can result in them deleting them before they get to the bottom of them. Think about the first sentence in particular, as it should attract the recipient's attention. Jump straight to the point and try to think outside the box.

#3 How often will you text your customers?

Don't spam your recipients with text messages just because you can. It's better to send fewer personalised texts than a lot of generic texts sent out to everyone. Our simple online platform makes it possible to segment by both gender and postcode, and if you need to send out to employees, for example, you can create lists and group them by department.

#4 Are you aware of the current legislation?

Remember that there is legislation regarding SMS services that must be complied with. If you are a charitable organisation, the recipient should receive a message back confirming that the mobile user has donated money (we set this up for you automatically). If you use text messages for marketing, it's important that you have permission to send out text messages in the first place and that you give recipients the option to stop the service again (we set this up for you automatically, of course). Trust is paramount, so remember the rules.

#5 Do you think about when text messages are sent?

Few people do this, but it can be very effective in reaching recipients when they have the time and energy. If you need to send out an offer to a customer, try to do it during the weekdays when receptivity is highest. However, if you need to send an instant service announcement to your employees or other relevant people, then of course you do it immediately. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are said to be good days, as the recipient feels energised and full of courage for the week ahead.
