ChatGPT is on everyone's lips right now - and for good reason. The latest version provides a clear insight into human technological progress and the future we are looking towards. While some see ChatGPT as the most fascinating piece of IT ever created, others see artificial intelligence as a direct path to unemployment and a future without human contact.
Fortunately, most people agree that ChatGPT opens more possibilities than it closes, and ChatGPT has already impressed the world with its ability to write articulate articles, write complex code and much more.
If you ask us, artificial intelligence is not something we should be afraid of. Instead, we should learn to utilise AI to our advantage and make it a natural part of our toolbox.
ChatGPT is exactly that: a tool that can make your life easier. Also for those who work with SMS. We show you how in the article below.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (an AI) created by the company OpenAI. The full name of the programme is: Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer.

The programme uses an artificial intelligence called "Natural Language Processing" (NLP), which in simple terms means that it can predict which words are most likely to come after a given text. ChatGPT can engage in "dialogue" and generate human answers to the questions you ask it. It can do this because it has been trained to do just that by reading large amounts of text given to it by OpenAI (so it is pre-trained).
The GPT from OpenAI is not entirely new. The first model, GPT-1, was launched back in 2018, but since the launch of the updated ChatGPT-4 model in March 2023, the programme has received a lot of publicity. This is because the new version of ChatGPT has received a major overhaul. ChatGPT-4 can handle far more parameters than before, and the limit on the number of words it can use has also increased significantly. In addition, the new version is multimodal, meaning it can read and understand images - and OpenAI has made plug-ins possible, which opens up even more possibilities.
In other words, ChatGPT-4 is the most advanced AI to date.
As the old saying goes: Show it, don't tell it.
We asked ChatGPT to tell us what it really is. See the answer here.
First, we ask a simple question:

And then we ask in a more in-depth way:

As the examples above demonstrate, there are several different ways to ask a question to ChatGPT, and the way you ask the question will have a big impact on the type of answer you get. More on that in the next section.
Example of AI in everyday life
There are many other kinds of AI - artificial intelligence. An example that many can relate to is the music service Spotify. When listening to music on Spotify, you can ask the system to give you suggestions on which songs to listen to. The platform can also create entire playlists specifically designed for you.
It does this using advanced artificial intelligence that - based on what you've listened to in the past - can find similar music that you're likely to like.
How does ChatGPT work?
An interaction with ChatGPT starts with you asking it a question or giving it a task. It's also called giving it a prompt. ChatGPT then uses your prompt to generate an appropriate text or response.
Because the model has been trained with such huge amounts of text, it can give you answers that sound incredibly human and almost natural.
If you are not satisfied with the way ChatGPT responds to you, you can also ask it to respond to you in a different tone (e.g. critical, friendly, polite, etc.) or from a specific role (e.g. a professional, a child, a specific author, etc.).
The response you get depends entirely on the prompt (text) you give to ChatGPT.
What is a (good) prompt?
A prompt is the input - the text - you give to ChatGPT. Typically, it will be a short text or question that tells ChatGPT what it needs to consider or respond to. The better the prompt you give your programme, the better the results (answers) you will get.
A good prompt:
- is as specific as possible.
- sticks to one language.
- contains no open-ended phrases or terms that can be interpreted in multiple ways.
- lets ChatGPT know exactly what its task is and whether it needs to take specific parameters into account.
Learning to write a good prompt takes practice and a lot of attempts. The best tip is to be as specific as possible so ChatGPT knows what you want from it.
There are also techniques such as Prompt Priming and Refining that can make your prompts even better.
You can read more about prompt engineering at OpenAI.
How to use ChatGPT for SMS strategy?
While ChatGPT may sound like the new superhero in the class, it can't stand alone. So don't worry about the programme taking over your office chair anytime soon.
On the other hand, ChatGPT can be a great tool when it comes to working with SMS. Among other things, the programme can be used to create first draft SMS messages, generate ideas for SMS marketing campaigns or provide feedback on your SMS automations.
All with a good dose of common sense and source criticism on your part, of course.
In the next section, you'll find 4 examples of how ChatGPT can help you with your SMS strategy.
Examples: How to use ChatGPT for SMS
Do you have creative block? Or do you just need a fresh perspective? Then ChatGPT might be what you need. With the help of a few prompts, ChatGPT can help you make your SMS efforts a little sharper.
Below are 4 different examples of how ChatGPT helps the fictional webshop VufVuf.dk write and improve flows and create SMS campaigns.
Example 1: Ask for feedback on an existing text

In this first example, we ask ChatGPT to give us feedback on some existing text. We get five points of great feedback, which we then use to ask ChatGPT to correct the text. ChatGPT does this too, and we now have an optimised SMS flow.
Of course, when ChatGPT gives you feedback, don't listen to it blindly. Instead, bullet points can be used as inspiration to sharpen your texts.
Example 2: Ask ChatGPT to create a new text

One of the things that makes ChatGPT-4 so unique is its ability to write texts that are very close to what a human would write. This can be seen in the example here, where we ask ChatGPT to write a welcome flow for SMS from scratch.
Without giving the model specifics on the length or content of the messages, it provides a really nice draft of a welcome flow for VufVuf. The flow serves as a really good draft that we can work with afterwards.
When we ask the programme to make the tone more friendly, it solves this too. However, it chooses to add emojis in the new version.
When you include emojis in SMS messages, you go from having a message limit of 160 characters to only having a limit of 70 characters. At the same time, an emoji often counts for more than one character. So it costs more for you to send messages with emojis. ChatGPT is not aware of this, so you have to ask it to write the text without emojis if you prefer.
Example 3: Ask ChatGPT for campaign ideas

In this example, we ask ChatGPT to come up with ideas for campaigns. The ideas are not too far-fetched and quickly get our creative juices flowing.
Example 3.2: Simplified prompt

Above, we've asked ChatGPT to do the same thing again, but with a much more simplistic prompt. The answer is therefore also simpler, but is a good example of how you can ask ChatGPT to perform the same task, but in different ways - and thus get different types of answers.
Example 4: Ask ChatGPT to translate

ChatGPT is multilingual. It reportedly speaks more than 95 different languages, including Danish and English. That's why you can also use ChatGPT for translations. Many even believe that ChatGPT's translations are far better than the ones we see in Google Translate.
The translation in this example works quite well and can save a translator a lot of time by handling the first draft, which can then be worked on further.
What should you be aware of with ChatGPT?
As we've already mentioned a few times, we can't blindly leave tasks to ChatGPT. At least not yet. There are a few pitfalls to be aware of, and using ChatGPT should always go hand in hand with a good dose of common sense.

This image is a screenshot of the text you see when you open a new chat in ChatGPT.
The following is important to be aware of if you are new to ChatGPT:
1. ChatGPT is not online.
BecauseChatGPT is not online, you cannot ask it to perform tasks or answer questions based on links. You can't ask it to base its tone of voice on your website either. It can only relate to the information (text) that you give it inside the system.
2. ChatGPT has limited knowledge.
ChatGPThas been fed with knowledge until September 2021. After that, OpenAI stopped providing the machine with new knowledge, and since ChatGPT is not online, as mentioned, it doesn't know anything about events that happened after 2021.
3. ChatGPT reads in tokens.
Atoken can be one word or parts of a word. It's the way the model reads and understands. This means that if you make a very long prompt (text to ChatGPT), you should be aware that the programme can read a maximum of 4,096 tokens at a time. You can use OpenAI's tokeniser to check how many tokens your prompt has.
4. ChatGPT is (still) lying.
It's a well-known phenomenon that ChatGPT can lie. Not necessarily consciously, but because it doesn't know any better. It may have been fed past lies from the internet or it may decide to invent facts because it doesn't know enough about a topic. That's why it's important that you don't rely blindly on ChatGPT, but fact-check everything from there.
Of course, we can't end a post about ChatGPT without asking the modeller for help. In true AI style, we asked ChatCPT to give its best advice on how to use the programme.

ChatGPT Q&A
How do I create a profile on ChatGPT?
To create a profile on ChatGPT, visit the openai.com website, find the "Products" list and go to "ChatGPT". Click the "Sign up" button, fill in the fields and you're ready to go.
Is ChatGPT free?
ChatGPT is currently (April 2023) a free tool that anyone can use. However, there is a paid version, ChatGPT Plus. It costs $20 a month and comes with a range of benefits like priority access and more features.
Does ChatGPT work in Danish?
Yes, ChatGPT speaks and understands many different languages. Including Danish. In fact, ChatGPT performs so well in Danish that you don't need to communicate in English in the programme. However, some argue that ChatGPT is better at understanding and responding in English.
How do I know if ChatGPT is lying?
You can't be sure that ChatGPT will always respond 100% correctly. Therefore, the best thing you can do is to use common sense and source criticism. In your prompt, you can actually tell ChatGPT to only respond to things that it knows are 100% correct, e.g. "I want you to answer 100% correctly". However, even if you do this, you should be aware that ChatGPT can still lie.
What are the copyright rules on ChatGPT?
ChatGPT generates text based on large amounts of data. Such text is not considered unique and therefore texts from ChatGPT are not covered by copyright rules. However, as a copywriter, it's important to make sure that what you write is original. Therefore, we do not recommend copying text directly from ChatGPT. Instead, use the template to create draft texts that you can work on yourself.
